Atrial Fibrillation -“Newer treatments for an old disease”
The tenth Dr. B. Krishnaraj Memorial Oration was held on 04th December 2016 at the conference hall, Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, Coimbatore. Dr.S.Murali Dharan, Cardio Thoracic Surgeon, CEO and President East Bay Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgical Associates, California spoke on Atrial Fibrillation-“Newer treatments for an old disease”. He enlightened the gathering about the prevalence, causes, clinical aspects and the management of atrial fibrillation. Dr.S.Murali Dharan highlighted that atrial fibrillation “Shortened men’s lives by 18 years and women’s lives by 21 years”. He in his talk also emphasised the recent trends in diagnosis and its influence on stroke and other thrombo-embolic phenomenon. He also stressed on the need for intervention, especially the surgical options in treatment of atrial fibrillation. He concluded his talk by pointing out the need for early diagnosis and tailored approach treatment to this condition to prevent serious consequences associated with the disease.
Dean Dr.P.Sukumaran welcomed the gathering. Sri. D.Lakshminarayanaswamy, Joint Managing Trustee of Sri Ramakrishna hospital, in his presidential address highlighted the eminent qualities and memories of Dr. B. Krishnaraj. Dr.V.Sarveswaran, Head of the department of general surgery, announced the Dr. B. Krishnaraj awardees and Mrs.Parvathi Krishnaraj, chairperson of Dr. B. Krishnaraj Memorial Foundation gave the awards and cash prizes to Dr.M.Vamseedharan and Dr.J.Gradlin Roy.
