Hi Folks, we at YourCoimbatore.com are very pleased to introduce this new column, J’s Take.

Presenting Mr. M Jeyaram who will share his thoughts on current affairs, the subject of his choice and all that issues that affect us. We are starting this with his views on Education…

The present school education system with its undue emphasis on rote learning and thus crippling the very basic instincts of creativity, innovation and independent thinking of our children needs a complete overhaul. Reforms in education system will remain incomplete without a corresponding change in its evaluation process.

The present school education system with its undue emphasis on rote learning and thus crippling the very basic instincts of creativity, innovation and independent thinking of our children needs a complete overhaul. Reforms in education system will remain incomplete without a corresponding change in its evaluation process.

The system of moderation being followed by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)  and some state boards while finalising class 12 marks with an objective to offset ambiguity of exam questions and any errors, achieve parity in the evaluation process and annual percentage has created some unintended consequences on the ground. Considerable chunk of students scoring centums in non- quantitative subjects such as English and political science whose numbers have been keep increasing by year is one such unintended outcome from the policy of moderation..

While the CBSE and other state boards have now decided to do away with moderation system, much needs to be done to remove the ills plaguing the present evaluation system. It is time country must brace itself for a examination system which tests the conceptual understanding of the subjects and analytical skills of the students besides fostering their creative responses.
