Annual group meeting on Sugarcane 2017 was jointly organized by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore and ICAR- Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow for two days from 22nd to 23rd September, 2017. More than 200 Agricultural scientists from ICAR, SAUs, representatives from sugar mills of Tamil Nadu and Private Companies participated in the meeting. The gathering of scientists were welcomed by Dr. M. Maheswaran, Director of Research, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. The Project Coordinator Dr. S. K. Shukla, presented the highlights of research carried out in the AICRP programme. He stressed the need for the expansion of fluff varietal programme, soil health based carbon sequestration, micro-irrigation in order to save water upto 40 per cent. He also presented the outstanding performance of new varieties from the AICRP programme.
Dr. K. Ganesamuthy, Director, Centre for Plant Breeding and Genetics, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore in his introductory speech, indicated that the new variety released by TNAU was notified under all national level. Dr. V. Ravi, Director, Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute, Aduthurai, in his address stressed the need for biotic, abiotic tolerant short duration varieties and bio formulations development of red rot disease management and ethanol production from sugarcane. Dr. Bakshi Ram, Director, Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore in his introductory speech emphasized the need for the evolution of new sugarcane varieties for the above characteristics. He indicated that 3126 cane varieties have been released for the past 100 years but only few varieties sustained under field condition.
Dr. C. R. Ananda Kumar, Registrar, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore gave the inaugural adress. He released the souvenir on Prospects and recent development in sustainable sugarcane production, Annual Co-ordinated AICRP on Sugarcane reports, leaflet on Sustainable Sugarcane Initiative (SSI), Tami booklet on New cultivation technologies for Sugarcane and a leaf folder about the Sugarcane Research Station, Cuddalore. He also requested the sugarcane scientists to formulate a roadmap to evolve more sugarcane juice and soft fibre with 90 per cent water content. He also wants to strengthen the genomic research in sugarcane.
